Investigation into the Causes of Brown Centre in Sweet Potato

The objective of this investigation was to identify the conditions that produce the disorder brown centre (BC) in sweetpotato. This project produced evidence based on tissue and soul analysis, as well as field experimentation, that the incidence of BC is exacerbated by fertile growing conditions. Based on the evidence it is suggested that in highly fertile fields the risk of BC might be lowered by initially growing crops other than sweetpotato or by growing a sweetpotato cultivar resistant to BC.
